A Fairy Tale Engagement at The Quarry

On Thanksgiving evening, in the shadows cast by the tall smokestacks of The Quarry Market, a handsome young man, Prince Edward of Cementville, Texas, bends on one knee as he gazes up at the woman of his dreams, standing in the moonlight.

Drew FitzSimon Photography

"Jane," he says, "I've never been a romantic type, but from the moment I met you, I haven't been able to stop thinking about you. You're always on my mind and in my heart. I love you."

Jane's eyes widen as she witnesses her prince charming gracefully whip his hand into his coat pocket and pull out a black velvet box.

He props it open. "Will you marry me?"

Jane gasps and tears begin to form. "Yes, yes. A thousand times yes!" she whispers through muffled tears as Edwards stands up and whirls her around in a hug.

The happy couple returns to Jane's family's home where they had eaten their holiday feast just hours before and they announce the official engagement to the anxious crowd.

Everyone congratulates the couple and immediately date and location ideas begin to fill the conversation.

"Why not this spring?" Jane asks. "I've always wanted to get married in the spring in Texas."
Edward nods excitedly. "Whatever you wish, Jane. I'm just glad you said 'yes'! Let's do the wedding however, whenever and wherever you want."

Jane smiles. "I was thinking we could have the wedding at The Quarry Golf Club. Edward, you love golfing there and both of our grandparents used to work there when the back nine was a limestone rock quarry. They harvested the cement used for the state capitol building--it'd be so sentimental."

"That sounds perfect!" Edward says.

And the planning begins...

Stay tuned.

Review of Live Music

Last week The Quarry celebrated the day of triple "11s" with a weekend full of live music. Three days, three musical artists and three different genres of music.

11/10/11 featured Austin Forrest (R&B/soul). Austin is kind of a recent "regular" at The Quarry in that we've been fortunate to host him three or four times this fall. We love his R&B/soul music, especially on the chilly fall evenings around the fire pit.

11/11/11 featured Lindsey Kane (acoustic pop). Lindsey performed acoustic pop cover tunes, ranging from Katy Perry to Destiny's Child. Lindsey was also a "first" for The Quarry this fall--the first female musician to perform as part of the fall live music lineup on the patio. We enjoyed her beautiful voice and the vocal flair she lent to popular cover songs like Just the Way You Are

11/12/11 featured Garrett Heinrichs (Texas country). Garrett has played at The Quarry before, but this was his first time to play on a Saturday--in fact, it was our first time to host live music on a Saturday! The Quarry normally hosts music on Thursdays and Fridays in the fall, but we had a special request for live music on Saturday by a local alumni group requesting live music for their high school reunion. It was an enjoyable night!

In addition to being a "first" in terms of music on a Saturday night, it was also a "first" for having one song dedicated specifically to a young child in the group.

What a fun weekend! This week's live music lineup features James Vives.Vives has performed once before at The Quarry and it was a PACKED night, so you won't want to miss this awesome performance on Thursday, Nov. 17 from 7:30-9:30 p.m.

Supporting Eddie Moreno with Shetler Wade Jewelers

Shetler Wade Jewelers and The Quarry Golf Club are sponsoring an event on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011, to raise money for Eddie Moreno, a high school athlete paralyzed in an accident last spring.

Moreno was a senior at Alamo Heights High School and a point guard on the school’s basketball team when he was shot in a road rage incident.

“We spent a lot of time figuring out the best way we could help Eddie and his family,” said Michelle Shetler, one of the owners of the jewelry store.  “We decided to do what we do best – create memorable and enjoyable experiences.”

Live music and complimentary refreshments will be available at the restaurant at The Quarry Golf Club beginning at 6:30 p.m. Special leather bracelets symbolizing a commitment to Moreno’s recovery along with jewelry and watches at all price points will be available for purchase. A portion of the proceeds from all sales will go to the Moreno family; however, no purchase is required.

“Our hearts go out to this family. We all live in this area, our kids go to school with the Moreno boys and we want to help,” Shetler added.

Shetler Wade Jewelers is a boutique jewelry store that carries lines from top designers.  Owned by Michelle Shetler and Kelly Wade Fry, the store is located in the Quarry Heights Building at 7373 Broadway, Suite 106.

The event is open to the public.  Please e-mail eddie@shetlerwadejewelers.com if you plan to attend.  For more information, contact Terri Herbold at 210-826-0660.

Putt your best on rolled greens

Fall Greens Conditions are back at The Quarry!

The much anticipated crispness of fall weather is rolling in and The Quarry Golf Course conditions begin to shine! As the weather gets cooler, we are once again able to return to lower mowing heights and our regular greens rolling schedule. But what does this mean for you?

Basically, “rolling the greens” is a great playability perk we have at The Quarry. After the mowers go out, the rollers may follow, which allow the putting surface to be smoothed over once (or sometimes twice!) again. This provides for maximum green speed and improves the uniformity of the surface. This process also smoothes out the spike marks left by those lazy guys who drug their spikes yesterday. Tisk, tisk.

Tips for putting your best on “rolled” greens:

Monitor the length and pace of your stroke—this is the best way to control your speed.

Allow for adequate “break” in your chosen line. Faster rolling balls can take fewer breaks, but balls that miss the hole can travel much further by the cup, leaving a much more difficult second putt.

Good luck and play well!

Thanks Sean Etheredge for this insight!

Live Music Series: Jonathan Moody aka Mr. Jukebox

Tonight's free live music night featured Jonathan Moody. A new talent for The Quarry and, man alive, was he a hit!

The crowd couldn't stop talking about how incredible it was that he could play any song requested and add his own acoustic flair.

Watch a video of Jonathan in action!

Personally, I loved his rendition of "I'm Yours" mingled with "Where is the Love." The lyrics were intertwined for a really unique, awesome performance.

The Quarry One Minute Clinic #1

The Quarry is here to help you improve your golf game (as well as provide you with entertainment, beautiful banquet facilities & casual dining).

So every week be on the look out for advice from The Quarry with tips and tricks to improve your game. Tips are provided by our very own Head Golf Professional, Sean Etheredge, PGA.

This Week's Tip:
It's a scorcher out there! Make sure you are being safe while enduring the last few weeks of the hottest days of summer. Two great ways to keep your game on point while giving a nod to your health are:

1) controlling your body temp
2) staying hydrated

Don't wait until the third hole to start drinking water; by then it's too late. Try this: I pop two Nuun tabs in a water bottle and start drinking it a couple of hours before. If it's really hot, I sometimes use a couple more tabs during the round to stay ahead of the heat. They are great; like sugar-free Gatorade, so no crash!

Also, use plenty of sunscreen and a chilled Frog Togg towel to cool off your head and neck between shots.
In addition to making you feel cooler, it might even make the bad shots feel less painful.

You can check out the Pro Shop for these beat the heat products and more. Stay hydrated!

Thanks Sean! Be on the lookout for more advice coming your way via this blog every week.
