Heinrich’s family exposed him to various types of music including oldies, blues, country and rock and roll. The diversity of his musical interests influenced Heinrich as he began writing his own music at the age of 17 and contributed to the development of his hybrid sound of country/ blues/ rock.

Enjoy Heinrich’s entertaining show, an unparalleled view of rolling hills and rock formations and tasty dishes!

Live Music with Austin Forrest

The Quarry Golf Club has successfully hosted live music on Thursdays for several months now (thanks for all of your support!). This past week we hosted live music on Thursday and FRIDAY, for the first time ever.

Ausitn Forrest performed for a crowd of about 65 people on The Quarry outdoor patio from 6:30-9:30 p.m. The intimate gathering loved his personal renditions of favorite tunes from Jimi Hendrix, Jim Croce and John Mayer, as well as his own compositions like "She Breathes".

His slightly-raspy yet soothing bluesy/blue-eyed/soul voice coupled with popular tunes, neat musical "toys" that made him sound as if he were in a duo and the stunning view of rock cliffs and green rolling hills certainly all played a part in contributing to the perfect fall evening.

We had families in attendance with darling little ones, young and mature couples (I hesitate to say "older") on their weekly date night and large groups gathered for a friendly get-together. Clearly, there's something about The Quarry live music nights that appeals to everyone.

And of course I'm biased, but I love the food! I enjoyed the Chop Chop Salad, my husband had fajitas and a friend of ours devoured the famous Fish & Chips. I'm hungry again just thinking about the delicious spread and it's only 10 a.m.!

We have free live music again this week on Thursday and Friday. So join us Thursday, Sep. 29 for Charlie and the Coolcats with classic oldies or come party on the patio on Friday, Sep. 30 with Jonathan Moody (the human acoustic jukebox) with his country/contemporary musical style.

Event Hosting at The Quarry

So The Quarry Golf Club hosted a private event for  Bexar County Medical this week. There were about 250 people in attendance, which is awesome because The Quarry can host groups as large as 300 at our facilities, plus we have easy-access free parking for more than 200 vehicles.

Our cooks and chefs constantly amaze us with their abilities, check out some of the detail in their fruit and fromage displays!

All in all, it was a great evening with great company and we were honored to host Bexar County Medical and the Mark's Brother's with their musical talents.

Check out a video of the Mark's Brothers. They'll be performing again Oct. 20, 2011, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. on the patio.

Fall fashion golf apparel tips: Keeping your game cool…or warm…or cool again!
Ahhh, fall in Southern Texas—the temperature can be 95 or 65 and every degree in between. Much like the saying goes, "If you don’t like the weather in Texas, just wait about 10 minutes and it’ll change!" So, how do you prepare for a great round of golf with ever-changing weather?!?
First, do your research. Check the weather online. If you have a smart phone, log on to the app store from your cell phone provider and pick up The Weather Channel or weather bug app. These apps can prove invaluable in giving you some quick info about what to expect, as well as streaming radar from upcoming storm events or changes in the current conditions. What time was that storm rolling in? Winds pick up to 35 mph at what time you say? Now you know.
Next, pack in layers. If you are one of those golfers who packs all of the golf balls you own in EVERY pocket of your bag, help yourself (and the bag boys) out and ditch some of that dead weight!

Throw in a base layer (like FootJoy’s Performance Base) which can be worn under just about anything and keeps you warm while providing UV protection and wicking sweat.

Then, consider a micro fleece or merino wool blend sweater or vest. Vests are gaining popularity once again and earning their place in more golfers’ bags by providing warmth to their cores while keeping their arms mobile and unrestricted.

Last, for the really rough stuff, you need to be prepared. If a couple of inches of rain won’t stop you from playing, consider investing in rain gear. Yes, the material might remind you of a fancy camping tent; but they do make trendy pieces like FootJoy’s DryJoy pants or tops.

Even if wearing rain gear doesn’t sound so appealing now, the fashion trade-off is definitely worth staying dry for. Plus, if you’re dry, you are more likely to be allowed back in the house when you return home from your four hour adventure!
Also, a word to the wise, wet weather gloves and towels are irreplaceable and made for a reason: they work! Hang the extra towel from the inside supports of your umbrella and leave the wrap on as much as possible during the round.  Then, next thing you know—Boom! Dry towel when you need it!

Good luck out there this fall, whatever might come your way.
Thanks Sean Etheredge, Quarry Head Golf Pro, for this advice!

Free Live Music Thursday (folk rock) & Friday (soul)

We’ve got a live music line-up this week that’ll get you dancing in your computer chair; so before you hurt yourself, come join us on The Quarry outdoor patio for this Thursday and Friday’s live music.

Thursday, Sep. 22 from 6:30-9:30 p.m.:
Manford Place (indie/folk rock)

Join The Quarry for free live indie folk rock music this Thursday with Manford Place. Be prepared for energetic music and delicious food and drinks, too!

Manford Place is a four-piece acoustic band based in San Antonio, Texas. The band infuses its original indie folk rock style with a wide range of recognizable covers. With three lead singers in the band, Manford Place has the ability to keep audiences engaged with their harmonies as well as each singer’s unique voice. The new arrangement of members has certainly created an excited buzz throughout San Antonio. With their combination of original songs, diverse covers and their energetic stage presence, Manford Place continues to win over crowds all over South Central Texas.

Friday, Sep. 23 from 6:30-9:30 p.m.:
Austin Forrest (blues/soul/R&B)

Come to The Quarry Golf Club for free bluesy/blue-eyed soul/R&B music this Friday with Austin Forrest. Get ready for great music, good company and delicious food and drinks.

Having grown up in Georgia and North Carolina, Austin Forrest brings his love of soul music to San Antonio, with influences ranging from Stevie Wonder and James Taylor to D’Angelo and John Mayer. He enjoys surprising audiences with unique renditions of popular tunes by lending his own rhythm and blues vocal flair and by garnishing songs with swinging guitar leads. His music is best described as bluesy, blue-eyed soul kind of pop and adult contemporary (John Mayer, Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Bill Withers, etc.) with some toys on the pedal board, making his music sound like a duo.

And, of course, we’ve always got great happy hour specials after 5 p.m., for food and drinks.

The Quarry--it’s the place to be.

The Quarry One Minute Clinic #4

Eat right to play well!

Starve off the bogeys with my favorite game time snack!

Most golfers I know love to stop at “the turn” (between holes 9 and 10) and grab a drink or snack. Most do it out of habit or necessity, but if you’re looking to play your best, this snack should be chosen for optimal performance. Snacks for performance? Huh??

Yep, you read right. What you choose as a snack can actually help or hurt your game and, if it’s not smart, a poor choice could hinder your performance throughout your round. Sugary candies, non-filling chips or crackers, or caffeinated/ alcoholic beverages can all slow digestion, spike your insulin and/or blood sugar levels and impair your senses! Good luck with that tee shot on #18 under those conditions!

For the best results with your in-round snacking, try to keep the portions in manageable sizes. Combine proteins, simple or complex carbs and a little healthy fat. My choice? PB&J on whole wheat bread with a thin layer of granola. It’s a simple recipe you can throw together or grab at the turn. The whole wheat bread is a nice, slow-digesting complex carb for energy, while the jelly provides some sweetness with a touch of sugar. The peanut butter (or almond butter if you’re feeling super healthy) provides some healthy fats and the granola gives it a nice crunch. Cut it in half and you can eat ½ before and ½ at the turn. Bring on those birdies!!

Putt your best on rolled greens

Fall Greens Conditions are back at The Quarry!

The much anticipated crispness of fall weather is rolling in and The Quarry Golf Course conditions begin to shine! As the weather gets cooler, we are once again able to return to lower mowing heights and our regular greens rolling schedule. But what does this mean for you?

Basically, “rolling the greens” is a great playability perk we have at The Quarry. After the mowers go out, the rollers may follow, which allow the putting surface to be smoothed over once (or sometimes twice!) again. This provides for maximum green speed and improves the uniformity of the surface. This process also smoothes out the spike marks left by those lazy guys who drug their spikes yesterday. Tisk, tisk.

Tips for putting your best on “rolled” greens:

Monitor the length and pace of your stroke—this is the best way to control your speed.

Allow for adequate “break” in your chosen line. Faster rolling balls can take fewer breaks, but balls that miss the hole can travel much further by the cup, leaving a much more difficult second putt.

Good luck and play well!

Thanks Sean Etheredge for this insight!

Fantastic Fall Shape

Let's get into shape, fantastic golf course shape, that is!

We're rolling greens twice this week in an effort to really prep for the fall.

We're increasing playability conditions by dusting and double cutting, creating a more consistent putting surface.

You'll feel like your playing on championship turf by the middle of this week here at The Quarry.

The weather channel tells us it's 88 but feels like 84 degrees on the course. What more could you ask for?

And we're excited to announce there is no more scheduled maintenance for the remainder of the fall season.

Come check out the fall display in the Pro Shop! We've got all kinds of specials on FootJoy shoes, men's and women's apparel and more.

And you've got to see our new line of Ashworth men's shoes.

Live Music Series: Jonathan Moody aka Mr. Jukebox

Tonight's free live music night featured Jonathan Moody. A new talent for The Quarry and, man alive, was he a hit!

The crowd couldn't stop talking about how incredible it was that he could play any song requested and add his own acoustic flair.

Watch a video of Jonathan in action!

Personally, I loved his rendition of "I'm Yours" mingled with "Where is the Love." The lyrics were intertwined for a really unique, awesome performance.
