The Quarry One Minute Clinic #2

Play Like a Champ! Here's this week's advice from Sean Etheredge, head golf professional at The Quarry.

"The 2011 Players Club Championship is just around the corner...Let the Rumble at The Rock begin!

As we finally say goodbye to the smoldering and sticky days of August, September brings the hope of more fall-like weather and festivities. That means football season and Friday night lights, a change in weather with a temperature drop (maybe a little help here?) and you guessed it…the 2011 Players Club Championship!

Yes, all the fun that is the PC Championship is back and it’s still FREE for Players Club Members! If you aren’t currently a Quarry PC Member, you can join for only $199 annually and take advantage of all PC benefits and discounts.

Monday, September 12 is the day it all goes down here at The Quarry. It starts with a Quarry-style buffet lunch and registration from noon-1:45 p.m., followed by a shotgun start at 2 p.m. This is your chance at the ultimate bragging right! The format has changed a bit, but it’s sure to be fun and a great afternoon for all.

For questions or to sign up, please call The Quarry Pro Shop at 210.824.4500. Just remember: all entries MUST be in by September 5 at 6:30 p.m. Good luck and play well!"

Utopia at The Quarry

Utopia--an imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect. Yeah, that pretty much describes last night at The Quarry Golf Club in San Antonio.

Last night was an unforgettable night at The Quarry. We held the pre-screening party prior to the exclusive showing of the film "Seven Days in Utopia" at the Regal Alamo Quarry Stadium 16 in the banquet room from 5:30-7:25 p.m.; live music on the patio with Manford Place from 6:30-9:30 p.m.; and the live drawing for the golf cart at 8 p.m.
Our secondary-prize winner!

Big Congratulations to Bill Maysun,
the winner of the $10,000 souped-up monster golf cart.

Unfortunatly, Mr. Maysun wasn't present to claim his prize, and we wanted somebody present to leave with something...so we drew names out of the lottery spinner for a second place prize--the catch was, you had to be present to win. The prize was dinner for your entire table (up to $200 value).
Dustin Burell, our general manager, drew the names. Lou Resplicka...not present. Todd Norman...not present. Kevin Johnson...Janet Noulard...not present.

Then, Gordon Tibone! He won a gift card to The Quarry for $200! Congratulations Gordon!

All in all, a pretty successful night. See pics below!

The Quarry One Minute Clinic #1

The Quarry is here to help you improve your golf game (as well as provide you with entertainment, beautiful banquet facilities & casual dining).

So every week be on the look out for advice from The Quarry with tips and tricks to improve your game. Tips are provided by our very own Head Golf Professional, Sean Etheredge, PGA.

This Week's Tip:
It's a scorcher out there! Make sure you are being safe while enduring the last few weeks of the hottest days of summer. Two great ways to keep your game on point while giving a nod to your health are:

1) controlling your body temp
2) staying hydrated

Don't wait until the third hole to start drinking water; by then it's too late. Try this: I pop two Nuun tabs in a water bottle and start drinking it a couple of hours before. If it's really hot, I sometimes use a couple more tabs during the round to stay ahead of the heat. They are great; like sugar-free Gatorade, so no crash!

Also, use plenty of sunscreen and a chilled Frog Togg towel to cool off your head and neck between shots.
In addition to making you feel cooler, it might even make the bad shots feel less painful.

You can check out the Pro Shop for these beat the heat products and more. Stay hydrated!

Thanks Sean! Be on the lookout for more advice coming your way via this blog every week.

Live Music Series: Doo Wopping with Mark's Brothers

Mark, Mark and Rick--collectively known as Mark's Brothers--really impressed the intimate crowd last night at The Quarry Golf Club in San Antonio with oldies favorites, mad guitar skills and even a little ukulele action.

Oh yeah.

My personal favorite song of the night: Just My Imagination. You know, made famous by The Temptations. Well, Mark's Brothers did The Temptations proud!

You can't beat sitting on the patio of The Quarry, overlooking the majestic back nine, eating the almost-too-pretty-to-eat Quarry Stack as you tap your toe and sway to the Mark's Brothers.

Listen to a clip from Just My Imagination (pay no attention to the dark video accompanying the sound, sorry!)

Oh, and a big Happy Happy Birthday to one of our female guests last night! She and her whole party came ready to celebrate; all dressed in Hawaiian attire and they even brought leis for the servers! What a great idea. Have your birthday bash at The Quarry Live Music Series!

Until next time, let your imagination, just your imaginaaaaation, (imagine a talented signer) run away with you.

Yay, aerification!

That's right, ladies and gents. The Quarry Golf Course is closed Monday, August 15 and Tuesday, August 16 for the annual summer aerification process.

If you're not terribly familiar with aerification, (and you're a man) you can just think of it as a sort of "bacon makin' process" for golf courses. It's not the prettiest site to see, but boy, are the results worth the effort. If you're a female, you can liken aerification to superly-intense microdermabrasion.

According to the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, aerification is a mechanical process that creates more air space in the soil and promotes deeper rooting, thus helping the grass plants stay healthy. In most cases, it's done by removing half-inch cores (those plugs you sometimes see near a green or in fairways) from the compacted soil, allowing for an infusion of air and water that brings a resurgence of growth. The spaces are then filled with sand "topdressing" that helps the soil retain air space and makes it easier for roots to grow downward.

You do want luscious greens and fairways, don't you?

We'll see you Wednesday, or in two weeks if you're waiting for the course to get back to absolutely flawless, tip-top shape again.
